“Simba, you have forgotten who you are, and so have forgotten me. You are more than what you have become!” Mufasa
I always hated the question “So, what do you do?” as if my response would give free license to put me in my place within the pecking order of life. Hey, relax, it’s only my job.
Entrenched in corporate politics for over 43 years was disheartening. I was brought up to always respect and find the good in people. But witnessing accepted cultures of self-serving behavior, manipulation and malicious alliances sickened me. It’s no surprise that half of the workforce is disengaged. Statistics show that 80% of people hate their jobs. And so, like a blind side clip, I was fired.
And like Simba heard Mufasa, I heard the voice of my father. He told me that my job doesn’t define me. What he did to pay the bills was never an indicator of what was inside his heart, or impact the love he showered on his family. His example always gives me hope.
Change is an opportunity for self-reflection and discovering your true worth. And here’s the secret, you don’t follow your passions; your passions follow you.
Today, I happily belong to the other 20%. Now when approached and asked, “So, what do you do?” as a Children’s Picture Book author my proud response is “I help kids have wonderful dreams.”
Thanks Dad; Thanks Mufasa
