Joy Harjo is the 23rd United States Poet Laureate. Appointed by the Library of Congress, she is serving her second term and is the first Native American to hold that honor.
I am currently enjoying her National Bestseller An American Sunrise. A collection of compassionate poetry that tells the tales of a fierce and ongoing fight for sovereignty, integrity, and basic humanity. She creates bridges of understanding while reminding readers to face and remember the past.
It is said “Her poetry displays a strong commitment to her social and political ideals as she fights tirelessly for Native American justice, ending violence against women, and a variety of important issues. Her masterful spiritual grace always shines through with compassion and forgiveness.”
