Coffee cake is a moist, tender cake that is usually topped with some kind of streusel topping and served alongside coffee or tea. Coffee cakes stand apart from other cakes because of their streusel topping but are not frosted.

German women brought the concept of the kaffeeklatsch to America but it wasn’t until 1879 when these delicious cakes were officially referred to as coffee cake. For generations grandmothers have been passing down their special home recipes, some including fruit, spices, nuts and even sour cream for their families to enjoy as an everlasting gift of remembrance.

So, this morning, along with the new leaves sprouting and the song birds chirping, I’ll sip on a hot mug of coffee and watch the glorious sunrise with a delicious slice to celebrate the day. Here’s to you, grandma Goose.
